In a show a support for social enterprise development in Jamaica, Earl Jarrett, general manager (right), Jamaica National, is joined by Robert Ready, Canadian High Commissioner to Jamaica as the two promoted Social Enterprise messages at the recently concluded 6th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference, held at the Montego Bay Conference Centre, between June 13-18. These messages are part of the work of Social Enterprise Boost Initiative's (SEBI), a project which is co-funded by USAID and managed by the Jamaica National Foundation. SEBI was a feature at the Conference.

 

Saffrey Brown (2nd right, partially hidden), general manager, Jamaica National Foundation (JNF), convinced a few of her colleagues and conference delegates at the recently concluded 6th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference, in Montego Bay, to join her in championing the cause of 'Social Enterprise' with the raising of banners with messages from Social Enterprise Boost Initiative's (SEBI) 'Equals' campaign. SEBI is co-funded by USAID and JNF with the objective of creating an enabling environment for Social Enterprises, helping them become efficient businesses and increasing public awareness so that these organisations can get support. Brown presented on Social Enterprises (SEs) at the conference while the SEBI booth showcased works from SEs currently receiving support from the foundation.

SEBI is co-funded by USAID and JNF with the purpose of creating an enabling environment for Social Enterprises, helping them become efficient businesses and increasing public awareness so that these organisations can get support. The SEBI messages were very visible during the conference.

A social enterprise is a business that generates income from the sale of goods and services and uses the profits to solve issues such as: unemployment, homelessness and environmental degradation.

 

A Social Entrepreneur is an individual who establishes a for-profit enterpise with the primary objective of using the profit generated to alleviate a social, cultural or environmental challenge.
